Deliberate attacks reinforce need for public places to be better equipped

There was more tragic news this week when four students were killed and at least eight others were injured in a mass shooting at a suburban high school in Michigan.

The teenage assailant was charged as an adult with one count of terrorism, four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of assault with intent to murder, 12 counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony. 

The weapon authorities said was used in the shooting, a 9mm Sig Sauer SP2022 semiautomatic pistol, was purchased by his father four days before the shooting.

Over in the UK a taxi driver was hailed a hero after keeping a passenger locked inside his taxi in the moments before he detonated a home-made bomb outside a maternity hospital in Liverpool.

Police have confirmed the suicide bomb that killed the male passenger is now being treated as a terror attack. The attack came moments before the 11am two minutes silence on Remembrance Sunday.

This event, which could have been far more devastating and tragic had the taxi driver not acted so heroically, only reinforces the need for public spaces, which are so vulnerable to deliberate attacks, to be better equipped with emergency care supplies.
