How you can provide support to Turkey and Syria during 3-month state of emergency

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has spoken to the press and declared a 3-month state of emergency, in the aftermath of the 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes. At the time of writing, more than 33,000 people have tragically lost their lives across Turkey and Syria in what is the most deadly earthquake in over 10 years.

“Turkey’s government has deployed nearly 25,000 search and rescue personnel — and countries around the world have pledged aid, but emergency workers in both countries say they are completely overwhelmed.” - CNBC

Rescue efforts are still underway to search for survivors; Syria in particular isn’t prepared for such a crisis to happen as it has been crippled with war and terrorism for many years, as well as Turkey undergoing their worst economic decline. The first earthquake happened before dawn, when many people would have been sleeping. The World Health Organisation (WHO) stated around 7th February that fatalities could reach as high as 20,000 in the coming days, which the numbers have surpassed this prediction already. 60,000+ aid personnel are currently in the earthquake-hit zone in Turkey, but with the devastation so widespread many are still waiting for help.

Search teams from more than two dozen countries have joined the Turkish emergency personnel, and aid pledges poured in. Aid efforts in Syria have been hampered by the ongoing war and the isolation of the rebel-held region along the border in Syria. - Sky News

The EU has sent more than 1,150 rescue workers along with around 70 rescue dogs to Turkey to provide essential emergency support;

“Ten Urban Search and Rescue teams have been quickly mobilized from Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, France, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania to support the first responders on the ground,” EU commissioners Josep Borrell and Janez Lenarcic said in a statement. - CNBC
